Table of ContentsLogging into the Fedora GNOME Desktop

Linux provides a number of options in terms of graphical desktop environments. The two predominent desktops are currently KDE and GNOME. In late 2007 work started on this book with the intention of providing an overview of the GNOME desktop. After the first few chapters of the book were written it became clear that, although many Linux distributions support the GNOME desktop, the GNOME environment had been modified slightly for each distribution. The version of the book designed address GNOME in general was eventually abandoned in favor of a specific book for each of the major Linux distributions. This book, therefore, if the first in a series of GNOME desktop books to be published at Techotopia and is written specifically for the Fedora Desktop.

The objective of the book is to provide the reader with the necessary information to use, customize and configure the GNOME desktop within the context of Fedora Linux. This book is intended as a companion to the Fedora Linux Essentials book which covers the use and maintenance of the underlying Fedora operating system.
